Freeze & Balance
Duration40 mins
Grade LevelF–2, 3–4, 5–6, 7–10
Learning Objectives
Students will develop balance, reaction time, body control, and listening skills by moving freely to music and freezing into Balance It poses when the music stops.
Materials Needed
Balance It app or printed balance cards
Speaker and music playlist
Open space for movement
Projector or display screen (optional)
Instructions
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
Free dance warm-up — play music and encourage students to move creatively around the space using different locomotor movements (skipping, galloping, jogging, side-stepping).
Freeze & Balance Game (20 minutes)
Play music while students move freely around the space.
When the music stops, the teacher displays or calls out a Balance It pose.
Students must freeze into the displayed pose within 5 seconds and hold it for 10 seconds.
Students who wobble, fall, or take too long sit out for one round (then rejoin).
Vary the movement types between freezes — “This time, move like a crab!” or “Travel backwards!”
Every 3–4 rounds, increase the hold time by 5 seconds.
Elimination Round (10 minutes)
Play a competitive round where the last 5 students standing earn a point.
Teacher selects increasingly difficult poses from the Balance It app.
The final 2 students have a “balance-off” — who can hold the longest?
Cool Down (5 minutes)
Slow music, gentle stretching, and reflection:
Which freeze pose was the hardest?
How did moving differently before the freeze affect your balance?
What helped you react quickly?
Assessment
Observe students’ reaction time, balance accuracy, and ability to maintain control after active movement. Assess listening skills, body awareness, and their ability to transition from dynamic movement to static balance holds.
Extension Activities
Students take turns controlling the music and selecting poses
Add partner freezes — when music stops, find a partner and create a combined pose
Try with eyes closed during the hold phase
Incorporate themed movement (animal walks, sport movements) between freezes
