Create Your Own Balances

0
Grade Level3–4, 5–6, 7–10

Learning Objectives

Students will develop balance, coordination, and teamwork skills through engaging, movement-based activities using Balance It cards and interactive games.

Materials Needed

Balance It cards (as inspiration/reference) Space for practice and presentation Music (optional for creativity and energy)

Instructions

Lesson Procedure: Begin with a warm-up activity to prepare students for movement. Introduce the task: each student or pair will create their own unique balance pose using ideas from the Balance It cards or their own inspiration. Students practice and refine their balances individually or in pairs. Encourage creative expression, variation, and use of different body levels/shapes. Optional: Play background music to foster a fun, creative atmosphere. Each student or pair presents their created balance poses to the class. Encourage peer feedback and discussion on pose complexity, technique, and creativity. Lead a cool-down session (5 minutes) with basic stretches targeting key muscle groups.

Assessment

Observe students during the creation and practice phase, providing feedback on technique, creativity, and engagement. During presentations, assess understanding of balance principles and their ability to describe the process behind their pose design.

Extension Activities

Challenge students to name their new balance pose Build a class “Balance Pose Booklet” with photos and names Incorporate a routine builder using all newly created poses Try modified versions (eyes closed, longer hold, partner transitions)
