Balance to the Beat
Duration40 mins
Grade Level3–4, 5–6, 7–10
Learning Objectives
Students will develop balance, rhythm, coordination, and creative expression by performing and transitioning between Balance It poses in time with music.
Materials Needed
Balance It app or printed balance cards
Speaker and music playlist (varying tempos)
Open space for movement
Timer or stopwatch
Instructions
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
Play upbeat music and lead students through rhythmic movements — clapping, stepping, and swaying to the beat.
Beat and Balance (20 minutes)
Display a sequence of 6–8 Balance It poses (on screen or printed).
Play music with a slow, steady beat (around 60–80 BPM).
Students move freely to the music. On every 4th beat (or when the teacher signals), students transition to the next balance pose in the sequence.
Hold each pose for 4–8 beats before transitioning.
Gradually increase the tempo of the music to challenge balance and reaction time.
Encourage smooth, controlled transitions rather than rushing.
Choreography Challenge (10 minutes)
In small groups, students select 4 Balance It poses and create a balance routine that flows with the music.
Groups add creative transitions between poses (e.g., spins, steps, arm movements).
Each group performs their routine for the class.
Cool Down (5 minutes)
Slow the music and lead gentle stretches. Discuss:
How did the tempo affect your balance?
Which transitions felt the smoothest?
How does rhythm help with movement control?
Assessment
Observe students’ ability to maintain balance while responding to musical cues, transition smoothly between poses, and collaborate on group choreography. Assess rhythm awareness, creativity, and control during faster tempos.
Extension Activities
Try routines with different music genres (classical, pop, world music)
Add levels — perform poses at low, medium, and high heights
Create a whole-class synchronised routine to perform at assembly
Record performances and self-assess using video playback
