Balance Storytelling
Duration40 mins
Grade LevelF–2, 3–4, 5–6, 7–10
Learning Objectives
Students will develop balance, creativity, narrative skills, and collaborative performance by creating and performing stories where each scene is represented by a Balance It pose.
Materials Needed
Balance It app or printed balance cards
Story Prompt Cards (provided or teacher-created)
Open space for group work and performance
Optional: Props, music, or costumes for performances
Instructions
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
Play a quick game of “Pose Charades” — the teacher performs a Balance It pose and students guess which card it matches. This gets students thinking about poses as expressions.
Story Building (15 minutes)
Divide students into groups of 3–5.
Each group draws 5 random Balance It cards — these become the “chapters” of their story.
Groups create a short narrative where each card represents a key moment in the story. For example:
Card 1 (wide stance): “The explorers arrive on a new planet and plant their flag”
Card 2 (single leg): “They spot a strange creature and stand very still”
Card 3 (partner pose): “They work together to cross a river”
Students write or plan their story, assigning each group member a role.
Each pose must be held for at least 8 seconds during the performance.
Story Performances (15 minutes)
Each group performs their balance story for the class.
One group member narrates while others perform the poses.
Audience members assess each performance on creativity, balance quality, and storytelling.
Cool Down and Reflection (5 minutes)
Gentle stretching and discussion:
How did connecting poses to a story change the experience?
Which group’s story was the most creative?
How did you decide what each pose meant in your story?
Assessment
Assess students’ ability to connect balance poses to a narrative, perform poses with accuracy and expression, and collaborate effectively in a group. Evaluate creativity, presentation skills, and the quality of balance technique during performances.
Extension Activities
Write the story out as a picture book with photos of each pose
Perform stories for younger students or at assembly
Create a sequel using 5 new cards
Add sound effects, music, or props to enhance the performance
