Balance It Skills Test
Duration40 mins
Grade Level3–4, 5–6, 7–10
Learning Objectives
Students will demonstrate balance competency, self-reflection, and assessment skills through a structured skills test using Balance It poses with a clear rubric and self-evaluation component.
Materials Needed
Balance It app or printed balance cards
Assessment Rubric Sheets (printed — one per student)
Self-Reflection Worksheets
Timer or stopwatch
Clipboards and pencils for peer assessment
Instructions
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
Free practice time — students choose any Balance It poses to warm up and prepare for their assessment.
Assessment Criteria Introduction (5 minutes)
Explain the rubric criteria:
Pose Accuracy (1–5): How closely the pose matches the card
Stability (1–5): Minimal wobble, controlled hold
Hold Duration (1–5): Maintaining the pose for the required time
Transitions (1–5): Smooth entry and exit from the pose
Skills Test (20 minutes)
Students work in pairs — one performs while the other observes and scores using the rubric.
The performing student completes 5 selected poses (teacher chooses a mix of difficulties).
Each pose is held for 15 seconds.
The observer scores each pose on the rubric sheet and writes one piece of positive feedback and one improvement suggestion.
Partners swap roles and repeat.
Teacher circulates, providing additional assessment and moderation.
Self-Reflection (5 minutes)
Students complete a self-reflection worksheet:
Which pose did you perform best?
What area do you most want to improve?
Rate your overall effort today (1–5).
Set one balance goal for next lesson.
Cool Down (5 minutes)
Calming stretches and brief class discussion on what the assessment revealed about individual strengths.
Assessment
Use the peer-completed rubric sheets alongside teacher observations for a comprehensive assessment. Compare self-reflection responses with observed performance to gauge student self-awareness. Collect rubric sheets and reflections as formative assessment evidence.
Extension Activities
Video record performances for student self-review
Repeat the skills test after a practice block to measure improvement
Create student-designed rubrics for assessing creative balance routines
Use results to set individualised balance goals
