Balance It Maths

Duration40 mins
Grade Level3–4, 5–6, 7–10

Learning Objectives

Students will develop balance, coordination, numeracy, and problem-solving skills by combining Balance It poses with mathematical challenges involving dice rolls, scoring, and time calculations.

Materials Needed

Balance It app or printed balance cards (numbered 1–20+) Dice (2x six-sided or 2x ten-sided) Score sheets and pencils Timer or stopwatch Whiteboard or display for scoring

Instructions

Warm-Up (5 minutes) Dynamic stretches with a maths twist — call out simple equations and students perform that many repetitions (e.g., “3 + 4 = 7 star jumps”). Balance Maths Rounds (25 minutes) Divide students into pairs or small groups. Each round, a student rolls the dice: First roll = the Balance It card number (which pose to perform) Second roll = the hold time in seconds (multiply by 5) The student performs the selected pose for the calculated hold time. Scoring: If the student holds the pose without wobbling, they earn points equal to the hold time × difficulty multiplier (Easy = 1x, Moderate = 2x, Hard = 3x). Partners record scores and calculate running totals after each round. Play 5–6 rounds per student, then compare group totals. Team Challenge (5 minutes) Each group adds their individual scores together. The group with the highest combined total wins. Discuss strategies — was it better to attempt harder poses for more points, or play safe? Cool Down and Reflection (5 minutes) Stretching and discussion: How did the maths element change the activity? What scoring strategies did your group use? Which calculations were the trickiest?

Assessment

Observe students’ balance technique and willingness to attempt challenging poses. Assess their ability to calculate scores accurately, record data, and apply strategic thinking. Note engagement with both the physical and mathematical components of the lesson.

Extension Activities

Introduce fractions — half the hold time for bonus points Add a multiplication challenge between rounds Create a class leaderboard across multiple sessions Students design their own scoring systems and test them
